Cold , dank and drizzling when i parked up over the dam at eight this morning . A real trouty ripple was on the reservoir , and as i guessed , i had the 900 acre water to myself ! So , a good start weather wise , tackled up my trustee old Orvis nine and a half foot , six weight rod , opting for just a team of two flies this morning . A Kate Maclaren on the point and a bibio three feet up on the dropper , see how things went with that ! I scrambled down the west shore , fairly near to the dam wall , and cast out a line … using the step and cast technique to search the water ….. first fish hit the Katie Mac hard , a nice eight inch Claerwen brownie to the net , admired , then quickly released . sport continued along the shore , with a tally of nine brought to hand this morning . Three of the fish were crackers too , feisty old timers , the best of the morning must have been a fifteen inch superb wild brown trout . Fish like this deserve so much respect , and having been born in one of the many feeder streams , and survived probably a good few years , as wild as the wind and beautifully marked …… superb !!!!! I thought it was quite fitting to fish here , with the Platinum Jubilee looming , here was one of the Queens first public engagements with the Duke of Edinburgh back in 1952 , when the reservoir was officially opened . Im sure that day was just as exciting as some of the sporting days I’ve had up here with a fly rod , searching for the resident brown trout , that now call this marvellous place home ………
