Was with a dash of excited delirium that I mooched off to one of my old favourites this morning . Quite a significant day as it’s the true beginning of Spring and also the start of the season for the reservoirs and upland llyns in the Elenydd . This beautiful area of the Cambrian Mountains is home to not only the Elan Valley waters and Claerwen, which I fished this morning, but way out wild llyns like Gynon, Carw, Gwngu and the Cerrigllwydion lakes. All these require quite some effort to get to, and average between an hour and two hours yomping across the moorland . If you’re fortunate enough to follow some of the Monks Trod, happy days, if not, suffice to say your calorie burn up will be immense, as “off piste” moorland hiking is dam hard work !!!! Food and plenty of drinks are essential on these upland Llyn days, but soooooooooo worth the effort.
As I tackled up my trustee six weight Orvis rod , the day looked kind to me already …. A trouty wave to die for, and a lovely south westerly breeze … happy days I thought . With some arduous gym sessions over the last few days , I opted for just working the Southern shore, see how things pan out . A team of two initially, a bibio on point, and a Kate Maclaren on my dropper. Third cast, bang, a beautiful twelve inch Elenydd brownie slipped over the net after a good account of itself ….. sport was good the first three hours to be honest , some misses , but another five made it to the net , equal hits on the point and bob fly , superb savage takes for the back end of March . I must admit water as usual for early season was jibbering ….. the four hours was enough for this callsign !!!!!! The flask and a sarnie were calling my name ……
A blissful morning up at an old favourite ….. she didn’t disappoint either !!!! Back down the Elan Valley tommorrow , possibly Penygarreg Reservoir, see how the mop flops there …. Time to bimble back to the lovely Rhayader, a cosy pub and a cheeky pint of the amber nectar I think ….. cheers folks, here’s to the 2023 season ….. enjoy !!!! Oh and of course tight lines !!!!!!!! 😉
