A beautiful afternoon as i walked around the Northern shore of the big Claerwen reservoir yesterday …. Walked an hour to where the bank profile slopes gently into the water, nice and manageable to wade in . A niggling northerly breeze was on the go , but when it calmed down every now and again , rises started showing about one ish, and pretty regular too …… The usual suspects of small black wet flies weren’t doing the business, so had to ring the changes and opted for initially a small cdc emerger on a long leader , due to the rise patterns created by the wild brownies ….. a definite emerger rise , little effort and mopping them up ….. couldn’t quite see what, so it was a swag fly to be honest ….. did the trick though, first fish a lovely supping rise to my emerger , bang , he was on !!!!! A nice start …… next two were on the emerger too, then I changed to a tiny black klinkhammer, which got a response too , this fly always does well up here …. sliding a dark spotted brownie of ten inches over the net !!!!! Lovely, and on a tricky bright day with a northerly breeze ……..
The walk back to my truck was truly magnificent, mottled clouds against the blue sky, curlews calling high up in the moors and buzzards scanning the high ground for lamb casualties, who’ve had an unfortunate encounter with the local foxes !!!!! Ravens were also croaking and wheeling well above the rolling mountains, frisky thoughts of spring on their mind !!!!! So in fairness , a really fun afternoon, and of course light till late, good job really, as I was strolling along the old dust track to my wagon at half six …. A timeless place, with me, Mother Nature, and a sprinkling of Spring, life’s pretty good here in the Cambrian Mountains …….😉😉🎣🎣
