Some relief this morning, with fine weather and a light North Westerly breeze, as I parked up at half ten at Pont ar Elan , which basically means bridge over the Elan . This is the location where the Elan river flows into Craig Goch reservoir, a very productive early season area for the wild brown trout. This has been my go to area to fish over the last few sorties, and very sporting it has been too, but of course, on the last two occasions, I had a hoofing southerly wind to contend with, and white horses as waves and beautifully defined wind lanes …… today alas, just a gentle trouty ripple …. See how the cookie crumbles …….

The fish were well up in the water , and my chosen flies were a Kate McLaren on the point and on my dropper some three feet up, a bushy bibio pattern …… both effective this morning , violent swirls and bow waves to the wet flies being retrieved fairly sharpish through the sedate ripple !!!!! Hard feisty takes, lovely job, and decent fish this morning too, a dozen brought to the net. I will say the water is still jibbering cold, and thoughts of a cosy seat in The Crown in Rhayader were winning the battle over staying another hour so so …… I had had a superb four hours sport, and these Elan brownies fight like tigers, scraping right to the net, dynamic stuff I must say ……. Weathers looking good for the rest of this week I think, looking briefly at the met office app , not many days with drops underneath the clouds !!!!!!! that’s gotta be a good thing …… A fun morning, don’t you just love it when the fish are really “on the go “, takes some beating ….. another fabulous day in the mountains , awesome 🎣😉🎣
