As I write this blog, it’s Friday and poets day ! Somewhat dank and dreary out, and so after a week of superb exploring in the Elan Valley, and her neighbour, the Claerwen Valley, I don’t feel so bad at all doing house chores and sorting out what’s required for the weekly shop !!! A lot of leg work this week, some across tricky moorland, but alas, sooooooo worth it, and as much as I enjoy the llyns and stillwaters of the upland Elenydd, I can’t wait to mooch upstream on the Edw, Arrow, Llynfi Cammarch and Ithon …… with my trustee six foot two weight rod, casting tiny Parachute dries ……. Blissful !

So a fun varied week, I’ve managed a few hours here and there on pretty much all the Elan Reservoirs and the mighty Claerwen ….. oh, with the exception of Garreg Ddu, which is heavily tree lined, this little cookie will have to wait till mid summer evenings, when the level has dropped and the bank is approachable for the Wiley angler ……. Sport has been manic on occasions this week, some lovely fish from Craig Goch on small dark traditional wet flies, and some specimen wild brown trout caught and quickly returned ……. As I conjour up this blog the water in Craig Goch is being lowered, I’m concerned about what happens to these wild brown trout when work is getting done on the dam by DWR CYMRU ….. I presume an action plan is in place ????? I shall do some digging, find out if fish welfare has been put into the mix !!!! We shall see……. Anyway , Penygarreg and Caban Coch reservoirs also had some good if not tricky sport, we had that niggling strong Easterly wind, arrggghhhhh horrid for us trout anglers, I persevered on the occasions it was being belligerent and managed to winkle out a few fish ….. interestingly on a very small Bibio a lot of the time . The bibio is a favourite of the upland trout, along with a yellow Sally, they really seem to love them ……and of course mid June the Bracken Clock gets them in a feeding frenzy , particularly up on Claerwen, Gynon and the other upland llyns …… a real spectacle to behold ….. you need to be there, I’ve only ever been there once and caught it just right …… you’ll loose count of the amount of fish you catch on the dry Cochybonddu ….. sublime sport !
