Up early bells as rain was imminent on “the oh so accurate” BBC WEATHER app ….. why do I follow this, it’s normally wrong and if they don’t know if there will be any rain it’ll be marked as, chance of rain….. fifty percent !!! Come on, all this kit at their disposal and they seem to still swag it …..anyway rant over. The reason I was at the reservoir early was the rain, and if it was inbound, coupled with the bitting cold Easterly wind, it would have been grim, so I fished eight till just gone ten, and even with the nasty cold wind managed half a dozen crackers ….. beautifully marked fish as always .Craig Goch is hard to beat in Spring, as is all the Elan Valley to be honest …For twelve quid you have masses of potential for an excellent days fishing, what’s not to like !!! The fish on the top reservoir always slam into wet flies hard, as they do on all the waters, almost rod wrenching , feisty hard as nails, Welsh bars of gold !!!! Small dark wets again doing the business …. And cast just beyond the nearest wind lane …. Lovely job …… but boy was i glad to walk back to the truck across the moorland, eyes streaming as I walked into the wind . Back at The Ponderosa the wind was obviously a lot less in Rhayader, which is nestled in the mountains to be honest ….still cooler than yesterday though. Oh and tommorrow it seems like a south westerly breeze, more trout friendly but again rain due in mid morning …. So another sparrows fart sortie !!!!! I actually love being up in the Elan Valley or on a wild stream early in the morning, it’s so peaceful, yet nature is so aware of my presence when I’m in their world … a kingfisher will literally just miss you bombing downstream, an otter will dive for cover in that deep pool and a dipper will snake between the alders calling out as it goes !!!!

Hastily dekitted at home, quick brew, then onward to Ty Morgan’s in town ….. I felt I’d earned one of their all day breakfasts, I did feel quite the sinner….. but alas, I’ll do a good gym session later on so no real harm done …. As breakfasts go, these are belting and I do take my clients here should they require fuelling up before the days activities …… which may be a full day on one of the Elan Valley waters, an upland Llyn in the Elenydd or skulking up the River Arrow just outside Lyonshall……. Another blissful few hours, choices choices for tommorrow …… such huge variety locally, I just love it !!!!!! 😉😉😉🎣🎣🎣🎣
