‘Twas another early bells session that I did up at the lovely “sea in the middle of Wales” ….. I was up at Claerwen this morning at half six ….. what fantastic conditions, a lovely North westerly wind, and a enticingly fishy ripple, on the massive 900 acre sheet of water ….. I drove over the dam and tackled up hastily, I hadn’t brought a flash or any nibbles, as I knew it was to be a brief sortie on an old favourite !!!! The Westerly shoreline was sitting at a nice height … she wasn’t full up, as expected, but not really low like this time last year …. Some bank exposed, made wading a pleasure, although if your fishing here, be careful , there are deep silty areas that just hold you in place …. If in doubt, stay on the shingle …..
The fishing was superb …… small dark wets, my secret selection for here !!!!! Fished just under the wave , bang !!!!! Good solid takes… they really don’t mess around here, the brownies hit the flies hard when they want it, really hard !!!!! Both my point fly and dropper were getting equal attention, as I keep constantly on the move here….. casting then just moving slowly as I retrieve too …. Covering lots of fresh water !!!! A good stamp of fish this morning too …. Feisty, fat ten to twelve inch brownies … Great to see them as tubby as your average beer lout !!!!!! And a double hook up in the mix too ….I had the reservoir to myself, just blissful ….. solitude, a thumping rod tip and the odd calling from the mountain sheep ….. oh and ………….. nothing else !!!! Fantastic !!!!!
Must admit by half nine I’d gone three hundred yards up away from the dam, sport had been great …. .I could feel spots of rain in the air, did a point fly change and worked my way back, picking up another three fish as I ambled along the shoreline, and moving a few more…..I also had two long range releases, one was a really good fish too …… arrgggggghhhhhh, oh well, maybe another days hey !!!! A lovely three hours in the Elenydd …. Back to the Ponderosa, kit in the house, quick freshen up and onwards to Ty Morgan’s in Rhayader for a “ fat boy “ breakfast ….. which I’d been thinking about since half eight if I’m honest !!!!! Was it lovely ???? What do you think !!!!! Another sortie of blissful serenity completed …. I truly am spoilt ! Life’s more than good sometimes hey !!!! Suck the marrow out of it folks it’s not a rehearsal !!!!!!!! ….. and hey , as my Gran used to say, you’re a long time dead !!!!!! How true is that ……. Till next time, tight lines …………….
