Strewth , what a week of variety fishing wise, from the hallowed waters of Llyn Bugeilyn, to the confines of the lovely secretive River Cammarch …. And everything in between to be honest, I even had a recce of Nant Gwynllyn, a small feisty stream that joins the Wye close to the town of Rhayader. It’s an interesting little stream, in that it flows out of a Llyn and makes its own varied journey towards its bigger sister, the Wye. Trouty in every sense of the word, and yes I will do more digging and hopefully gain permission from the local farmer to go and wet a line on some of those tantalising trouty pools. Who knows maybe I can help out with some vermin control , be it bunny bashing or keeping the grey squirrels in check, as there’s lots of broadleaved woodland in the vicinity. It may be that Charlie needs thinning out nearer to the lambing season ….. we shall see !
The reservoirs fished well over the last week, fantastic weather for them, overcast, cool, with a lovely south westerly breeze dominating most of the week … fantastic sport on both Claerwen and Caban Coch reservoirs …. And the hits to the flies, solid thumping fit brown trout ….and some a respectable size too for these upland waters …. Just lovely to see………
My old favourite Llyn Bugeilyn fished well too, as she always does with a delicious mild westerly wind , fantastic …. Sport is always good there, if you ring the changes…… sometimes they’re up and willing to smash dries, and half hour later, they’re off the boil, and small dark wets are required, with a fast erratic retrieve….. so much fun though …… it’s so special down there, hidden in its own world across the moors…… I love it, the serenity and the freedom, the huge dose of big air you get, as soon as you get out of your truck, it’s awesome !!!!! And Salmo Nigripinnis always seems keen to please….. just great sport, if you keep on the move …… superb stuff !!!!
Moving on to a sublime session I had only yesterday on the secretive little River Cammarch, just beautiful dry fly sport ….. not massive fat chunky brownies of two pounds, that’s not what it’s all about. This is about exploring the wilds of Wales, with stealthy wading, casting an accurate size twenty dry fly to nervous, wild stream brownies. It’s about fishing those places that not many anglers go too, it’s about escaping the mainstream !!!!!! And yes a lot of those little Cammarch trout are only seven inches long, maybe a few of ten or eleven inches, but boy it’s fun, stealthy wading upstream, using all your pent up survival skills to present a fly pitch perfect, so it’ll get nailed in one splashy defiant rise….. yesssssssss !!!!! It’s what it’s all about, the strike, and he’s on …… fantastic !!!!
So, that just bout wraps things up , as I write this, it’s nine bells on the Saturday night. I’ve actually been out all afternoon in the Elan Valley, and am feeling quite smug. I have just completed a “Grand Slam” of three of the reservoirs, with success from each of them, with regards to catching trout. I digress, that’s another blog in its own right !!!!!! Variety has very much sprung to the fore this last week. Well actually nine days if I’m honest. Totally magical, with sport that has been sublime, thanks really to the cooler weather. Next week some clients are booked in so should be a fun one. Till then my friendly fisher folk, stay well, enjoy the long weekend. Go and have a bevvy or two with friends and loved ones, and if you can, get out there, onto a windswept Llyn, or a babbling secretive stream and enjoy the moment ….. lastly,……… tight lines !!!!!
