…….. Was with a great relief that I eventually managed to get out for my first sortie of the year yesterday. Things have been more than hectic in fairness, with only thoughts of wetting a line on open day a dwindling memory !!! I parked up close to the bridge of the River Edw, she was still pushing through at a pace, but manageable, just …… Well, in fairness you know what it’s like , I’m here, so let’s get going kind of attitude !!!! And anyway excited delirium had set in ….. I was ready !!!! I tackled up, initially a single big tungsten hairs ear nymph with a flash of colour ….. there was a slight tinge in the river ….. an indicator attached, and I was ready !!!!! That excited overly fast walk to the river, almost like Benny Hill !!!!!
Still quite lifeless down in the Edw valley , these tributaries take some warming up, the big Wye is much more user friendly, with good smatterings of Large Dark Olives and March browns showing …. So the Wye fish are certainly looking up now, when the window for feeding is right ….. I shall get out on the stretch behind my place, not the next few days, as it’s heavy rain at the moment, and heading into the weekend, again !!!!!! Ggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…………………
Two sprightly fish on the nymph, good solid takes too !!! ….. still a tad silvery, both only eight to ten inches, and definitely need to fatten up over a summer of heavy feeding ….. Still Great fun to have the rod tip dancing to a brownie from a secluded secretive stream ….. bliss !! This stream has a good head of bullheads and stone loach, I know this myself, from stone turning, every keen fly angler does it….. nearly every time I go to a wild stream I’ll do kick samples and stone turning…
This act tells us sooooooooo much about what’s going on and what’s living in and swimming in the rivers we fish !!! Here, most flat, selective stones you lift, there’ll be a bullhead, or Millers Thumb, generally, they stay put, but , bigger ones are normally off !!! Stone loach too are present here…. A lovely secretive fish …… fascinating these are !!!…. Tactical positioning of your net is need to inspect these glorious little fish ….. Anyway, I digress, my plan for some of the bigger deeper stretches was a sculpin pattern…. Due to the fact that this stream holds a good head of little stone dwelling fish !!!! ‘‘Twas a good move, I had three on the sculpin, brought back erratically… great fun too …. If it wasn’t taken on the first attempt, the feisty brownie would have another pop at it …. Cracking sport !!!!
So, that’s my start of the season …. Not huge fish, but that’s not the idea of wild brownie fishing, I fish remote places, wild streams, mountain llyns, away from people and houses, the only sounds you can here, are sheep bleeting, kites wheeling overhead, and the odd raven croaking in a majestic manner !!! This is the websites name….. it’s what I like to do, the experience of fishing places that are not often fished, if at all !!!! Taking clients into the wildest parts of Wales is fun and an adventure for them…..Some of the wild streams are that wild, I wear my heavy duty waders …… durable and strong but you just know you’ve done a day on a tricky wild stream, you may only catch a seven or eight brownies, and a whopper may be twelve inches, but it’s the accomplishment , likewise a two hour trek out to a remote mountain Llyn, you get there, and it’s all yours for the day, it may not have been fished that season, or even three seasons !!! ….. You’ve fished where no one has, for years maybe !!!! For that moment in time, the river, or Llyn is yours, as you cast your delicate dry to a splashy rise !!!! He’s on …. You smile !!!! That’s what I’m all about !!!! Escaping the mainstream ….. The SEASON has begun folks …. THE TIGHTEST OF LINES TO YOU ALL …….. 😉😉😉🎣🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🏴
