Always a treat heading to this large reservoir in the middles of Wales , and she didn’t disappoint yesterday afternoon either .Almost like September there to be honest , grey threatening clouds , white horses on the waves , and thirty mile an hour gusts ….. flaming June i thought !!!! Lovely tackling up with just a team of small dark wet flies and watching the kites making the most of the gusts of wind , and using it so casually to their advantage …. fantastic .

Started on the West bank , over the dam , and was only me there when i walked down to the waters edge . Nine hundred acres to myself , again …… lovely ! Fishing was fabulous , as the wild brown trout here always loose their inhabitions when a big wave is gracing this huge sea in the middle of the Elenydd ….. superb savage hits to the flies ….. didn’t seem particularly fussy which one they hit , and they wanted it on a fast retrieve too , point fly and dropper fly some three feet up , both getting lots of attention ….. Managed twelve to the net yesterday afternoon , between one and six in the evening , a really pleasant session , perhaps fished six hundred yards of the West bank . Its funny , out of all the Elan valley reservoirs , Claerwen is my absolute favourite . Its always a joy picking up my season permit from Daisy’s Newsagents of Rhayader in early March ready for the fly fishing sorties that are in the months ahead ……

And , to top of a great sporting afternoon , i had a double hook up , two cracking brownies , the one that took the point fly initially i didnt see as i was bringing the one to the net , i thought strewth he’s got some poke , only to then discover i had a brown trout on each fly !!!! That hasn’t happened to me for a while , i think the last time it did , i was at Llyn Bugeilyn …. having a red letter day there …….
